According to recent statistics, Canada has seen a 15% increase in people applying for food donations through 2022, and 60% of those are doing so for the first time. Food insecurity is at an all-time high with the increasing cost of rent, food, transportation, and utilities forcing families to make some tough choices. What makes these statistics even more disturbing is that youths are making up an increasing percentage of the people seeking food assistance.
It's easy to become desensitized to such an overwhelming need, leaving many well-intended people feeling they can't make a difference, but that isn't the case. The trick at this time of year is to aim small, and waste less. Instead of feeling helpless to solve widespread hunger, we need to aim to feed the families in our local community through the holidays, so that fewer children in Canada wake up Christmas morning hungry.
At Keystroke, we've decided to focus on one month, namely December 2022. Throughout December, we're donating 5% of all our new sales to Second Harvest in Toronto, to help give those in our local community access to the nourishment they need through the holidays. Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization, working with thousands of food businesses from across the supply chain utilizing logistics and technology to reduce the amount of edible food going to waste.
We're calling this campaign "Act! to end hunger".
* Keystroke is a monthly donor to Daily Bread Food Back and a regular donor to Second Harvest.
And by focusing on the number of meals we can provide, rather than the dollars we raise, we're hoping the impact will be more impactful to people. Through their buying power and food salvage efforts, Second Harvest can provide a meal to those in need for as little as $.36. That's a remarkable achievement. While our donations this month won't solve world hunger, our goal is to feed 10,000 people in our community who would have otherwise known food insecurity.
We hope you'll join us by donating HERE. And if we're quoting you any of our products or services this month, be sure to ask your sales rep how many meals your deal will provide.
