Book your domain with Keystroke and we automate your renewals
The first part of any web project has to be the domain name selection. Typically this is a variation of the business's name, an abbreviation, acronym, or a slogan of some sort ("ie. actbetter.ca").
Due to the finite nature of domains, names are not "purchased", they're leased for a specified period of time. When the Internet first started issuing top level domains, the extensions you could select from were few - namely they were .com's and country-code extensions like .ca's. Back in the mid 1990's when we booked "keystroke.ca", we were required to be federally incorporated company or provide proof of having offices in more than one province. Those requirements have loosened up quite a bit since those early days, and the selection of available top level domain extensions have increased dramatically. It is not uncommon to have several hundred top level domains to choose from, and they've been divided into categories like technology, business, food industry, etc.
Over the last few years "Premium Domains" have emerged that are sold at a "premium" price. These domains can range from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars, and these ridiculous fees are charged each and every year to those that want them.

Domain Management
Whether you use our Tucows storefront, let us book the domain on your behalf, or transfer it to our control, it is your domain. We prefer to manage the domains that we host because we can ensure those domains are renewed or expired in accordance with the customer's wishes. The only domains that we host that have ever expired unexpectedly, are those fully managed by the customer. The consequences of a domain name expiring can range from your site temporarily going offline and losing email access, to a your domain being permanently swiped by another party.
In the one or two instances that a domain theft has occurred in our business history, the customer was forced to re-brand under a different domain name or domain extension. The business consequences of this can be catastrophic.
If at any point you wish to reclaim the domain for your control, or simply transfer it to another party for them to management, we never lose site of the fact it is your domain. With all current accounts, the ownership of a domain will be transferred upon written request, forthwith.
f you wish us to retain control and management of your domain, but transfer the hosting duties in whole or in part to another company, we'd be happy to oblige. Having said that, be wary of any design, SEO, or hoster that "requires" domain management to operate on your behalf. This is bunk, and should be a warning to you that they intend to use management of your domain against you at a later date.
We prefer to manage our customers domains, but we do not require it, and you should steer clear of those that say they do.
